    Legislation to extend the authority of the Secretary of Education to purchase and buy participation interests in guaranteed student loans under the Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act of 2008 (ECASLA) for an additional year, through June 30, 2010. The bill was passed in the House by a vote of 368-4. The bill was passed in the Senate under unanimous consent and signed into law by President Bush on 10/07/2008.

    President Bush signed H.R. 5715 "Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act of 2008" into law on May 7, 2008. This law raises loan limits, establishes new optional repayment terms for parent PLUS loans and easing of credit criteria, gives the Secretary authority to advance funds to guarantors and purchase FFELP loans, loosens restrictions on who is eligible for Lender of Last Resort loans and expands eligibility for ACG and Smart Grants.
